Spiritual Discipline of Fasting

As we enter the sacred season of Lent, let us turn our hearts and minds to the spiritual discipline of fasting. Fasting is not merely an act of self-denial; it is a powerful tool for deepening our relationship with God, purifying our souls, and strengthening our spirits.

Throughout the Bible, fasting is depicted as a means of drawing closer to God, seeking His guidance, and demonstrating repentance. In the Old Testament, we see prophets like Elijah and Daniel fasting as they sought God's direction and intervention. In the New Testament, Jesus Himself fasted for forty days in the wilderness, setting an example for us to follow.

Let us approach fasting during Lent with  sincerity, remembering that it is not about outward appearances but about the condition of our hearts. As we deny ourselves, may we be reminded of our utter dependence on God and our need for His grace. May our fasting be a means of deepening our love for God and our compassion for others.

As we embark on this Lenten journey, let us meditate on these words from Isaiah 58:6-7:

"Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?"

May our fasting be a reflection of God's love and mercy, and may it lead us closer to Him
