Bible Verse: "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will." — Romans 12:2 (NIV)
A new year is the perfect time to embrace change and growth, especially in our mindset. Romans 12:2 reminds us that transformation begins with the renewing of our minds. But what does that mean?
Renewing your mind is about aligning your thoughts with God’s truth instead of conforming to the world’s ways. It’s an intentional daily choice to focus on what is good, pleasing, and perfect in God’s eyes. Start small: dedicate time each day for prayer, reflection, or scripture reading. These practices allow God to reshape your thinking and reveal His will for your life.
One powerful example of someone in the Bible who had to renew their mind is the apostle Paul. Before his dramatic encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus (Acts 9), Paul—then known as Saul—was a man consumed by zeal for the law and a desire to persecute Christians. His mind was set on what he believed was right, but it was far from God’s will. After his encounter with Jesus, Paul’s entire mindset shifted. He went from a persecutor of the faith to one of its most passionate advocates.
This transformation didn’t happen overnight. Paul spent time in prayer, learning, and unlearning as he allowed God to renew his mind. Through this renewal, Paul discovered God’s will for his life and became a vessel of transformation for others.
This week, reflect on your own life. Are there areas where your thoughts need to be renewed? Are you holding on to perspectives, fears, or habits that don’t align with God’s truth? Challenge yourself to notice patterns of thought that don’t reflect God’s promises and intentionally replace them with His Word.
Remember, transformation takes time, just as it did for Paul. Each day you choose to renew your mind, you take another step toward living in the fullness of God’s purpose for you. Let this new year be the beginning of a new mindset and a deeper walk with God.
